Statement of Intent
I have long been interested in travel photography, and I am particularly intrigued by remote places. With this set of pictures, my intention is to show the beauty and diversity of Spitzbergen, in the European Arctic. I have tried to convey the extraordinary clarity of light, from skies of striking colours to perfect reflections in the still water. At first glance, the landscape seems barren, a region of mountains, rocks and ice, the blue colour of some being very intense. There is wildlife here, and their movement is in sharp contrast to the stillness of the scenery. Sadly, there is evidence of past whaling, but now that hunting is controlled, populations of Polar bears, walrus and Arctic fox are recovering.
